A simple go-to-guide: Obtaining your LR truck license

Are you looking at obtaining your LR truck license in Sydney? Before you get behind that wheel and take a spin in any LR Truck vehicle, you must complete a few steps to be legally allowed to drive on NSW’s roads.

An LR truck is classified as any type of vehicle that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) between 4.5 and 8 tonnes OR carries more than 12 adults (including the driver) and weighs up to 8 tonnes.

Before you complete your LR truck licence training

Prior to applying for an LR truck license training course, you will need to make sure you have all of the appropriate documents ready and prepared.

You will need:

●     A valid C (car) class license for one or more years (learner license not included)

●     A pass on the LR knowledge test

●     A pass on the eyesight test

●     Successfully completed the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) or passed a Roads and Maritime driving test.

LR Truck Licence - The training process

Once you have obtained all of the above documents you are ready to go through the training process. The course offers you all of the skills you will need to operate an LR vehicle on Sydney and NSW roads.

There are a number of private companies that are approved to teach new drivers everything they need to know. The course runs through a range of scenarios that tests the necessary driving, navigating and operating abilities expected before getting an LR truck license.

●     A checklist of skills you will need to be able to perform are:

●     The ability to start, move, shut down and secure the vehicle

●     Pre-operational check and cabin drills

●     Demonstrated awareness of crash avoidance

●     Suitable knowledge of road rules

●     Capable skills in steering, braking, accelerating and gear changes

●     Parking

●     Hill stop/start

●     Securing a load and trailer safely

The course finishes with a Final Competency Assessment (FCA) to see if you are ready to hit the road.
