All you need to know about getting your LR truck licence

What is a Sydney LR truck licence? An LR licence is the next class up from a regular car licence, and

to be eligible you must have held a car licence for at least 12 months.

An LR truck or vehicle can be defined as one that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of over 4.5 tonnes
to a maximum of 8 tonnes, or it could be any vehicle that seats more than 12 passengers. This type of

Before you decide to apply for a LR licence, you must first make sure you are eligible and follow the 
necessary requirements.

In order to obtain an LR licence, you must:

• Have held a car licence, provisional, probationary for at least 12 months
• One must pass the written knowledge test and on-road practical driving test by the Department 

of Transport and Main Roads

• A medical certificate may be required if you have a current medical condition on your licence
• Pass an eyesight test  

LR truck licence training will require specific training. These training courses will usually cover important 

information and practical tasks surrounding:

• Road laws 
• Bus stop procedures 
• Starting and stopping sequence 
• City and highway driving 
• Reversing 
• Turning and handling 
• Vehicle positioning 
• Defensive driving

In order to obtain an LR truck license, you will be required to complete the training course and thereafter 

will be trained and assessed on the criteria. You must pass all the requirements and sit the final competency 
assessment as an RMS requirement. 

A Sydney Light Rigid Licence requires an RMS approved license course. Drivers are assessed against the 
competency standards by the RMS. Once these standards of competency have been achieved, the RMS will 
issue the licence.
